Lance Bass and Danielle Fishel recreated their 1999 prom picture, complete with Fishel's original gown and Bass' "hoverhand."

"I still don’t know why we didn’t work out!!" Fishel quipped in the comments. Bass came out as gay in 2006.

The former couple dated for a year in 1999 but broke up weeks after prom. They have remained good friends since.

Throwback Thursday came early this week thanks to Danielle Fishel and Lance Bass.

The Boy Meets World star and NSYNC member recreated their 1999 prom picture in a new Instagram reel. In the clip, soundtracked by Simple Plan's "I'm Just a Kid," Bass slips a corsage onto Fishel's wrist and they pose in formal attire, which included her original prom gown from high school.

The video then cuts to the retro photo, complete with Bass' iconic "hoverhand" floating over Fishel's waist in both moments.

"We recreated our 1999 Prom pic, hoverhand and all (and yes, that’s the ACTUAL dress!)" Fishel captioned the clip, adding. "I still don’t know why we didn’t work out!!" Bass came out as gay in a PEOPLE interview in 2006.

Fans were obsessed with the recreation. "That hover hand will always be iconic 😂❤️ we love a respectful king 😂," one wrote. "THE SAME DRESS? what a flex on multiple levels," another said of Fishel's prom gown. "Screaming crying throwing up 😭😍," a third commented. "Not the hand hover reenactment 😭," American Idol alum David Archuleta chimed in.

Bass took Fishel dated for a year. Not long after the boy band member and actress went to her high school senior prom together in 1999, they broke up.

"I was so sad," Fishel revealed during an August 2025 episode of Pod Meets World. She had visited Bass on the set of the "Thinking of You (I Drive Myself Crazy)" music video at the end of the relationship, prom photos in hand. "I think I also brought him our prom pictures to that shoot. Like, 'Here's your copies of our prom pictures. Are sure you want to do this?'"

Despite their breakup devastating Fishel at the time, the two remained close friends.

In another Pod Meets World episode from August 2022, Fishel said that she and Bass had a "very wonderful, very warm, loving relationship." “But it was completely lacking of intimacy — intimacy in the romantic sense. I held on for hope for way too long that we were going to get back together and get married and have a family.… It turns out I’m not Lance’s type.”

Bass has been married to Michael Turchin since 2014. They welcomed twins Violet Betty and Alexander James via surrogate in October 2021.

Fishel, meanwhile, has been married to Jensen Karp since 2018. They share sons Adler, 6, and Keaton, 4.
